More Casting Shock

.
Yesterday, in between basketball games, we were catching parts of the movie, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory". Not the new one, the good one: the old one starring Gene Wilder. Anyway, we wondered where else we had seen Norah Denney, the actress who played Mike Teavee's mom. Denney did a slew of other t.v. work in her career, but then we found out something even more interesting about her role in "Wonka".

It seems the producers of "Wonka" had someone else in mind for the role of Mrs. Teavee, and when that first actress who was offered the role passed on it, the role went to Norah Denney. The actress who first got the call to tour the chocolate factory was film actress, Jean Stapleton, who passed up a date with Wonka for a role in a new t.v. pilot. Did Stapleton make a mistake? Uh... no. The pilot was for a little sit-com called "All In The Family" which went on to become one of the most groundbreaking and important sitcoms in television history. Not to mention one of the funniest.
