Either America has finally awakened to the idea that there's another world out there beyond the boundaries of the U.S., or World Cup Soccer has a killer publicist. We're talking about the fact that three major U.S. magazines, Sports Illustrated, GQ and Vanity Fair are heavily featuring articles on the upcoming World Cup soccer championship. SI and Vanity Fair even put the World Cup on their covers.

Soccer, or as the rest of the world calls it, "football", has never been particularly popular in the U.S., but that will change as Americans become more competitive in the sport. But for now, we can at least appreciate how gorgeous are many of the world's best soccer players.

The current cover of Vanity Fair features Portugalan Ronaldo Christiano and Ivorian Didier Drogba in their underwear in a photo by Annie Leibovitz. The photo is not so great, a rare misstep for the famed Leibovitz, but there is nothing wrong with Christiano and Drogba's bodies. We've written before on East Village Afternoon about the sex appeal of Ronaldo, and this Vanity Fair cover will certainly amp up that rating a few notches. Inside the Vanity Fair issue are several more sexy photos of the world's best soccer players, including this
one of Dean Stankovic of Serbia and Carlton Cole of England. We suppose that when being photographed in one's underwear the question is "to tuck or not to tuck?" We're happy to see that Cole decided for the latter. Wow.,

But GQ Magazine outdid even the Leibovitz photos with a scorching hot editorial of American soccer player, Oguchi Onyewu. We're huge sports fans, but we'll admit, we don't follow soccer closely, so we'd never heard of Onyewu. But we'll be paying more attention from now on. This guy is amazing looking.
