The Last Surviving Rebel

(james dean and corey allen in
"rebel without a cause")
Corey Allen, 75, who played Buzz Gunderson in the iconic 1955 film, "Rebel Without a Cause", has died. Allen, an actor who later became a very busy, Emmy-winning television director in the 1970's, was the last surviving member of the famous film's cast. The other surviving cast member, Dennis Hopper, died of cancer just a few weeks ago. It's not hard to find Allen in "Rebel", he plays a large, pivotal role in the film, but he's most famous for being the driver of the other car in the "chicken race" scene. That scene in which Natalie Wood throws down her arms and jumps in the air to start the deadly race between James Dean and Allen is one of the most famous scenes in film history, and has been copied hundreds of times in other films, most notably in the 1978 John Travolta-Olivia Newton John hit, "Grease".
