John McCain Remembers It Well

Today, April 12, 2011, is the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the American Civil War, or The War Between the States. On this day in 1861, the first shots were fired on Fort Sumter, and the war was on.

If you're not a history buff, this day probably means nothing to you. But the Civil War era should be notable to you for one reason, one of our major political parties in 2011, the Republicans, are still struggling with the same social issues that Americans stumbled over in 1861: racism, the role of the federal government, women's rights, class warfare, etc. Jesus. Maybe with a little hard work and study, Republicans might one day be able to climb out of the 19th Century.
