Happy 77th!

.
Happy 77th Birthday to one of the world's greatest comedy legends, Carol Burnett.
.
America has produced hundreds of radio, stage, film and t.v. comedians, but only a few have achieved legendary status, Harold Lloyd, Charlie Chaplin, Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Lucille Ball, Bob Newhart, and of course, Carol Burnett.

Carol has reigned over Broadway, in films and most famously, as the star of "The Carol Burnett Show", which ran on CBS from 1967 to 1978, one of the last great variety shows on television. The writing and the acting was broad and farcical, but it still holds up today. Not long ago, CBS ran a reunion special which featured Carol and her old castmates in clips from the show, and it was one of the highest rated t.v. shows of the entire year. Not bad for a show that's been off the air for thirty years.

"The Carol Burnett Show" had many classic sketches, none probably more so than the "Momma and Eunice" skits. Luckily, many of these sketches are on YouTube; try to watch them without laughing, it's almost impossible. But the moment which is remembered as not only the funniest moment on "The Carol Burnett Show", but one of the funniest moments of all time in television history is the scene in which Carol, playing Scarlett O'Hara in a "Gone With The Wind" parody, emerges from the stairs wearing green velvet curtains, with the curtain rod still in them. Burnett has influenced generations of comedians and comedy writers, and in fact, her show helped to pave the way for two other important t.v. comedies, "Laugh-In" and "Saturday Night Live, 1975-80".
.
Thanks for the many years of fun and laughter, Carol! We love you.
