Cynthia Hits Where it Hurts

.
An update on our Michael Steele story from a couple of days ago. Steele, the Chairman of the Republican National Committee, got into trouble with right-wing, neo-con nutjobs like Bill Kristol and Liz Cheney when he said last week that the war in Afghanistan was a mistake and was unwinnable. You know, to the Republicans, to not be gung-ho on war, even a senseless one, is tantamount to admitting that you're a sissy, and that you'd like to wear your mother's dress to a boy scout meeting. To not go after the "bad guys", like the neo-cons' god, Ronald Reagan, did in so many B-westerns, and later in his greatest acting role, that of President of the United States, pushes all their panic buttons. Anyway, Steele announced today that he was absolutely not resigning.

Even more interesting, on Sunday morning's "This Week", Cynthia Tucker, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist for the Atlanta Journal Constitution who happens to be an African-American, said that Steele's appointment as RNC Chairman was an "affirmative action" hire. She said that Steele was only hired by the Republican Party so that the GOP could try to shed their image of being a "whites only" Party. And so now, if they fire him, which they'd probably like to do, they'll only reinforce that "whites only" image. So they're stuck with him. Oh, Cynthia, ouch!
