2009 Grammys - 9:14 pm

(katy perry)

Blink 182 gives the Best Rock Award to Coldplay. Lead singer Chris Martin admits they're not really a "rock" band. Smart move, Chris, maybe now Metallica won't beat the shit out of you in the parking lot later tonight!
.
The very, very unfunny Craig Ferguson tells some "jokes". Cut to audience: Lots of coma-like confused stares. He introduces Katy Perry who descends onto the stage in a giant banana, we're not kidding, and then she runs out onto the stage singing "I Kissed a Girl" wearing some kind of dress which looks like some of those crystallized Christmas tree ornaments that look like fruit. Are we missing something? What does a lesbian awakening have to do with a bowl of grapes, cranberries and bananas? Katy seemed overwhelmed by running around the stage and singing, out of breath actually. Maybe those bananas on her hips were really heavy, we don't
know, but it was a totally underwhelming performance.
.
Kanye West did a duet with a girl who we don't know... sorry, folks, we're not 16 years old, we're not up on all the current stars of Casey Kasem's Top 40. It was a pretty good performance, maybe because the girl did most of the vocals, but then that dip-wad Kanye West had to ruin a nice moment by announcing the upcoming "Best New Artist" Award, and then adding that he "wasn't sure why he hadn't won it." Nice, Kanye, you're all class.
.
The "Best New Artist" Award went to Adele. Brilliant, Grammys, you definitely got this one right. Adele's "Chasing Pavements" is an incredible song, and Adele is one of the best blue-eyed soul singers to come along since Dusty Springfield.
