Award Show Fever!

Tune in at 8 pm, EST, tonight where we'll be watching the Bafta Awards and the Grammy Awards, simultaneously blogging about both awards shows as they happen.

Okay, we know, we know, the Baftas, (the British Oscars) due to the time difference between London and New York, have already taken place, and we know all the winners, but it's still one of the funniest and most entertaining awards shows of the year, so we'll be watching it on BBC America.

The Grammys, sadly, have become increasingly irrelevant over the years, for several reasons, but the show still manages to present some of the most exciting live music performances of the year, so it's worth it just to watch for those.

The most consistent criticism of the Grammys is that they just give out too many awards. They have categories which include Pop, Rock, Rap, Classical, Country, Latin, R&B, Spoken Word, Comedy, Polka, yes, Polka! and that's just to name a few. An award sort of loses its prestige when 200 nominees show up and 190 of them win a trophy. Can you imagine the humiliation of being one of only a handful of musical performers alive today who hasn't won a Grammy?

But despite giving out trophies like Pez Candy, the show still dazzles. Remember Christina Aguilera's scorching take on "It's a Man's World"?, Melissa Etheridge's roof-shattering take on Joplin's "Take a Piece of My Heart", and when Ricky Martin performed "La Copa De La Vida" on the 1999 show, we watched not only a star being born before our eyes, but he single-handedly ushered in a new Latin music craze which swept America soon after. We'll be watching to see who tears the roof off tonight.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss are heavily favored to win "Album of the Year" for "Raising Sand".

On another blog, some Britney Spears queen actually asked who Robert Plant was. Wow.
