Tales From Hollywood

.
Everyone knows the classic 1985 film, "Back to the Future", which made Michael J. Fox a movie star. But until now, we didn't know that Fox wasn't the original Marty McFly. The role originally went to Eric Stoltz, who shot five weeks of footage before he was canned.

This tidbit was made public today as a part of the film's 25th Anniversary release on Blu-Ray. As a part of the Blu-Ray's "extras package", director Robert Zemeckis explains that although he liked Stoltz very much, they just weren't getting the laughs they thought they would with his performance. In steps Michael J. Fox, and the performance defines his career. But don't feel bad for Stoltz, at almost the same time that "Future" was released, Stoltz appeared in "Mask" with Cher, and his career was also off and running.
