I Fell Into a Burning Ring of Fire...

Come Thursday, January 22, at 10 pm, don't even try to call us, text us, email us or drag us out to have drinks and hold up a liquor store. We're not going anywhere. That's when the new season of "Burn Notice" begins.
.
We are self-admitted t.v. junkies, but let's face it, there's just not a lot of good stuff on the tube anymore. Sitcoms are derivative and poorly written, NBC's "Saturday Night Live" hasn't been funny or relevant for twenty years, (save one or two very brief moments in which Tina Fey imitated Sarah Palin), and while the reality shows are fantastic, after awhile they all start to seem the same. But every so often, a new show comes out of nowhere and catches the public's attention. Such is the case with the USA Network's "Burn Notice" starring Jeffrey Donovan and Gabrielle Anwar.
.
The main character, Donovan, is a former CIA spy who has been disavowed, or "burned" by the agency, and he's stuck in Miami until he can get off the burned list, whatever the hell that means. So to while away the time he takes on cases to help people in their fights with drug dealers, rogue foreign organizations, assassins, money launderers, etc., you know, a typical day in Miami. We don't understand all the spy/government lingo, but it doesn't matter, the plot isn't really important. At its most basic, it's just a Robin Hood story in which the outlaw helps the common folk.
.
What makes the show hum are the characters and the writing. Jeffrey Donovan is incredibly sexy, only slightly more so than the unbelievably hot Gabrielle Anwar, who has a thing for guns. The chemistry between Donovan and Anwar is palpable; they're former lovers who can't quite find a way to get back together, even though every fiber of their bones is aching for it. Think of a 21st Century Sam and Diane. Supporting are Sharon Gless and Bruce Campbell, in arguably their best work in years. The show's action is fast-paced, the sexual tension is non-stop, but we most love the quirkiness of the characters. Donovan seems to only eat yogurt, but has to constantly go out to buy more as Anwar and Campbell are raiding his refrigerator at every turn, Gless is a neurotic, chain-smoking yenta, and Campbell has a penchant for the small but important things in life, i.e. good shampoo, how to scam free drinks, and driving his girlfriend's Cadillac.
.
At times the plots of "Burn Notice" can be silly, and the acting can be really bad, it is the USA Network after all, but for mindless fun, you can't beat it. And did we mention that Jeffrey Donovan is really, really sexy?
