Jon Stewart Makes Television History

There are songs, and then there is grand opera. There are movies, and then there are epic films. There is t.v. comedy, the kind which is so routine, mundane and uninspiring, that it's often difficult to stay awake while watching it, and then there is what Jon Stewart did last night on "The Daily Show".
.
Stewart spent the first fifteen minutes of his show last night in an epic, operatic parody of Fox News' Glenn Beck. It was all there, the hystrionics; the convoluted, non-sensical logic, the blatent pandering to the dumbest and most uneducated among us; and yes, even the fake tears. The piece was more than just a comedic sketch, it was grand in scale, complete with crazy camera angles, props and even the signature Beck blackboard. The piece required a great deal of physicality from comedian Stewart, so much so that he was sweating heavily and breathless when it was done.
.
It's a shame that the word "genius" is used all too often, because Stewart's performance last night was clearly that. A comedian at the very peak of his powers. And it's also a shame that Emmy Awards are given out friviously these days, like candy, because Stewart's performance last night, while certainly deserving of an Emmy Award, deserves something more than just a standard Emmy. With that performance last night, Stewart placed himself among the all-time greats.
.
Below is the video from last night. You have to watch it, if for no other reason, so you won't wonder why "The Daily Show" is winning so many awards at the next Emmy Awards ceremony.
