Hollywood Coming and Going

We wrote a few months back about the fast-rising star of actor Cam Gigandet. He made his name on the t.v. show "The O.C." and in the "Twilight" film series, but he's quickly breaking out as one of the most charismatic and hottest of his generation of young actors. He's currently making a go of it in "Burlesque" with Cher and Christina Aguilera, and will appear next year in "Trespass" with Nicole Kidman. We're thinking that this guy is going to be big.
.
Meanwhile, some sex symbols from a slightly older generation aren't faring so well these days. The Johnny Depp/Angelina Jolie vehicle, "The Tourist", opened this weekend and flopped bigtime. We love Johnny Depp, but from the reviews we've read of the movie, it sounds like Depp sleep-walked through the film. And although Jolie is arguably one of the most beautiful women in the world, (Joan Collins nailed that one!), she's going to have to stop coasting on the fact that she won the genetic lottery and actually show some personality in her acting. Even sex-starved Americans tire of their sex symbols if all they ever do is pout their lips and make cow eyes at the camera.

Oscar Grub, Estrogen Edition

We just said a couple of days ago that it was too early to divide the prospective Oscar nominees into "Lead" and "Supporting" categories, but more critical reviews have emerged today which seems to do that job for us.
.
First we have to add two more names to the list of women who could garner an Oscar nom, Tilda Swinton for "I Am Love" and Nicole Kidman for "Rabbit Hole". Swinton is almost certain to get a nomination, but she's well known for not "campaigning" for the naked golden man, which will hurt her chances of winning. At this point, the consensus seems to be that for Best Actress, it's a three-woman race between Kidman, Annette Bening for "The Kids Are All Right" and Natalie Portman for "Black Swan".

You Don't Have to Say You Love Me

Nicole Kidman celebrated her 43rd birthday on June 20, and in looking over her recent slate of films in post-production, and those for which she's signed to star, the one which caught our attention the most was the upcoming biopic of Dusty Springfield, who died of cancer in 1999 at the age of 59. Kidman will reportedly play the pop star who struggled throughout her life with drink, drugs and a secret lesbian life, all the while turning out dozens of hit songs with one of the most famous and beautiful
"blue-eyed soul" voices in all of popular music. Michael Cunningham, who wrote the novel, "The Hours", which was turned into the film for which Kidman won her Oscar, is writing the script. Legions of Dusty fans are crying "foul", (or throwing up Yellow Cards if they're sitting at a World Cup match), complaining that Kidman is not a singer. Well, let's face it, no one can sing like Dusty Springfield, so if Springfield's fans are waiting for an actress who can most closely mimic the iconic singer's voice, they're going to be waiting for awhile. From all accounts, the biopic will focus more on the pop star's life, and for that, the film needs an actress. We're excited to see what Kidman and Cunningham will come up with. Let's just pray it's not another "Bewitched", okay, Nicole?

Oscars - 11:32 pm

As Shirley, Halle and Marion welcome Kate into the Stepford Wives Club, Nicole sees a problem. She notices that the knots are loosening behind Sophia's ears, and her face is beginning to fall. Nicole wants to help, but Sophia misinterprets Nicole's advances as an attempt to adjust her heaving mammaries.
.
"No, Nicole, you mussent touch the girls, they've won me an Oscar and mucho luxurious nights in many, many Hollywood leading mans' beds. Okay, darling? So back off, and leave the pretty ponies right where they are. I cut you!"
