Glass Houses

Normally, we love it when Republicans take cheap pot-shots at each other, but sometimes, their behavior is so low-class that it doesn't amuse even us.

(cindy and meghan mccain)

Here's the deal. Meghan McCain, Sen. John McCain and wife, Cindy's, daughter, appeared in a recent public service announcement about skin cancer. Both her parents are skin cancer survivors. In the ad, she appears as if she's naked, but she's really only seen from the shoulders up. Glenn Beck then took to his radio show to say that the idea of seeing Meghan McCain naked made him want to vomit. Wow. Both Cindy and Meghan chastised Beck on Twitter, but the damage was done.

Okay, here's what we've never understood. Why is it that the people who can least afford to make fun of someone else's appearance are always the ones who do? Does Glenn Beck own a mirror? Maybe someone who looks like the love child of Porky the Pig and The Pillsbury Dough Boy shouldn't be critiquing the looks of others. Just saying.

The Girl Can't Help It

Wow. Just one day after we relayed the rumors that Ryan Seacrest is having an epic, estrogen-fueled throwdown with his new "American Idol" co-star, Jennifer Lopez, (see our post below), comes the news that Miss Seacrest is picking a fight with another lady of note, Meghan McCain.
.
.
After Pres. Obama did an interview with Seacrest for his radio show last week, McCain tweeted, "there is something so unbelievably desperate and sad about the president going on Ryan Seacrest -exactly WHO is on his communications staff?" She went on to say, "No disrespect to Ryan Seacrest but I just don't think The President should be doing an interview with the producer of The Kardashians." Ouch, that hurts. But McCain wasn't done; she went on "The Tonight Show" on Wednesday night and told Jay Leno that she found Obama's decision to appear on Seacrest's show "kind of trashy."
On his radio show Thursday, Seacrest responded to McCain's comments by saying that she twice asked to appear on the same radio show she criticized. "I understand that we are not 'AC360'," Seacrest said. "She thinks (my radio show is) just so low-brow. I just want to be clear, it is the low brow show she wanted to be on twice to come promote her stuff."
.
Oh, Ryan, Ryan, Ryan. You're a swinging, hetero, Hollywood bachelor who's driving the biggest, baddest pussy-wagon in town, right? If you're not careful, people are going to confuse you with someone from the cast of "Mean Girls" instead of the big-balled, hyper-masculine, snatch-loving guy that you... wait a minute.

Twits and Twats

For the longest time, we ignored Twitter, thinking, why would anyone possibly care what some brain-dead celebrity is eating at the moment or the fact that she really loves puppies? Jesus!, we thought, this really is the beginning of the end of civilization, or at least a true step in the dumbing-down of it. But then we thought, hey! we're missing the obvious attraction of Twitter. Not only are the most famous among us voluntarily exposing their glaring lack of any discernable smarts, but we get to witness it first hand. It's sort of like a train wreck, only funnier. So with that said, we introduce our new feature: "Twitter of the Day".

A Breath of Fresh Air: Meghan McCain

"Refreshing" is another term we don't get to use very often, but it certainly describes Meghan McCain. Meghan, the 24 year-old daughter of U.S. Senator and 2008 Republican Presidential candidate, John McCain, first came onto the national radar in 2007-08 while campaigning for her father. She gained notice for being outspoken and opinionated, but seemed more moderate in her views than the typical Republican. She voted for John Kerry in 2004 and is a supporter of gay marriage.
.
Many expected Meghan to disappear from the national scene after her father's defeat, but in the just the past few weeks, her star power exploded. Meghan, who writes for TheDailyBeast.com and who has her own blog at McCainBloggette.com, began to be attacked by right-wing nutjobs like Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham. But instead of apologizing as so many of her fellow Republicans have recently done, Meghan fought back. She said that Ann Coulter was "offensive, radical, insulting and confusing...", (wow!!), and after Ingraham made fun of McCain's "plus size", Meghan called her "heartless and substance-less". Meghan also earlier let it be known that she was no fan of Sarah Palin.
.
We were impressed. But we didn't fall in love until we saw Meghan on "The Rachel Maddow Show" this past week. Meghan comes across as honest and sincere, yet young, fun and hip. She doesn't mince words, obviously having been baptized by fire on the national campaign trail, but she also doesn't pull cheap punches just to score points. She admitted on The Maddow Show that she didn't know a lot about the economy, preferring to discuss and write about the things she did understand. Wow. When was the last time someone on the national political scene admitted to not knowing everything? And we almost fell off our chairs laughing when Meghan admitted to having no interest in CPAC, the famous annual gathering of hardcore Republican strategists. You could almost hear the old Republican guards' seats being pinched at that moment. McCain said she loves the Republican Party but that it must become more moderate to attract younger members. She gets it.
.
Don't panic, we're not about to turn Republican, but we honestly love Meghan McCain. Remember when everybody wanted to have a beer with George Bush? Forget that loser, we'd give anything to kick back a six pack with Meghan! No doubt the Republican attack machine will sink to new depths to discredit Meghan, but something tells us this girl is not afraid, and she's not going anywhere. Good for you, Miss McCain!
