Liz has suffered countless health problems in her life, once even winning an Oscar because of a near-death experience. Many believe that Liz won her 1961 Best Actress for "BUtterfield 8" because the Hollywood community wanted to show their love and support for her after Liz nearly died following a bout of pneumonia and an emergency tracheotomy. Even Liz later said she didn't deserve the Oscar for that film, and that she hated the movie. Shirley MacLaine, who was nominated that year for "The Apartment" quipped, "I lost to a tracheotomy!"
